made it home for breakfast

I made it home for Mother's Day. I arrived at 1:30 am, finally fell asleep at about 2 am.

On the way home, I talked to Grace on the phone. She had been bugging me since Wednesday to tell her what time I thought I'd wake up on Sunday. I told her that I wouldn't be able to answer that question until I was actually driving on Saturday night. So when I talked to her last night while on the road, I told her that I would probably wake up about 9 or 10.

She brought me breakfast in bed. And then she brought smaller plates for she and my husband. (Sidenote here -- this is the third time I've gotten breakfast in bed on mother's day. This blessing has taught me one thing. For those of you who are lucky enough to have gotten this treatment, you quickly realize that it's a little awkward to eat in bed while everyone around you is just watching. So through experience Grace has learned to bring breakfast for others.) It was kind of like breakfast for everyone in bed. And it was very good! Fresh fruit salad, ham, eggs, Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, apple fruitcake, three real bittersweet chocolate truffles, coffee and juice.

In the midst of the meal, she said she had been thinking that she should think about a back-up career in case the Broadway actress goal doesn't work out. She would like to become a chef now. As you might be able to tell from the breakfast menu, this idea isn't whimsy. She's actually a pretty good cook. She makes cakes from scratch, decorating and all. After hearing this, I told her that she could look through my kitchen primer and a few of my cuisine magazines. By the time we were well into the discussion, my husband and I realized this could be great! I'm not going to complain if my child wants to experiment with how to make good food!

I told Grace tonight as she went to bed that I wouldn't want any other kid. I told her that I'm really happy to have her as my child and it makes my mother's days great.
